Motorcycle club gets county OK for summer event

MARSHALL COUNTY — The Marshall County Board of Zoning Appeals approved the request of the local ABATE motorcycle club to hold its' end of summer fundraising bash on private property at 10B and Upus roads.

The issue came up before the board last month, but was tabled until additional information and concerns could be addressed. Security, traffic control and sanitary concerns were discussed and documentation submitted by the organizers.

Heminger house asks for help from Marshall County Council

MARSHALL COUNTY — The Heminger House started in 1999 by Dean Byers and Laura Mann as a women's and children's shelter. The shelter has been able to assist nearly 1,000 individuals with temporary housing and now needs help with funding.
“We have always been fully funded through grants, donations, the Community Foundation, United Way and things like that. We have found ourselves, in the last year, in a huge predicament because we have lost about $65,000 worth of grant funding, by no fault of our own, purely by budget cuts at the state and federal level,” said Mann.

Boy Scout creating awareness

PLYMOUTH — Kevin Bachman working on his Boy Scout Eagle Scout project by creating awareness about the effects of dumping materials into the city's storm drains. Bachman is planning to spend Aug. 23 installing drain medallions and hanging posters to increase public knowledge. Anyone interested in helping should bring a sack lunch and meet at 900 Oakhill Ave. at 8:30 a.m. on Aug. 23. Bachman will be supplying water but suggests wearing work clothes and bringing gloves. City livestock ordinance passed

PLYMOUTH — The Plymouth Common Council made a final decision in regards to ordinance 2014-2079R. The ordinance contains the amendment specifying keeping livestock within city limits as unlawful. The council voted to establish what the violations will be for those that do not adhere to the ordinance. More details available in today's Pilot News.

Tony Stewart area events canceled

LAKEVILLE/PLYMOUTH — Tony Stewart's two scheduled area appearances this week have been canceled.
Stewart’s scheduled appearance at a meet and greet event at the Newton Center on Thursday, Aug. 14 has been canceled after a tragedy that occurred over the weekend at a New York dirt track race.
Stewart was involved in an accident that resulted in the death of fellow racer Kevin Ward Jr. on Saturday.
Anyone who has already purchased tickets for the Newton Center event will receive a refund. Please contact the Newton Center at 574-784-2749 for details.

Teens Waggoner and Whiteman apprehended

August 11, 2014

MARSHALL COUNTY — Two juveniles who escaped from a southern Indiana detention center, were taken into custody in Kosciusko County Saturday without incident.

Kody Whiteman and Adam Waggoner both have ties to Plymouth and were believed to be in the area last week. They escaped on Aug. 3.

Students head back to school this week

MARSHALL COUNTY — There has been a lot of activity recently at local schools, even though summer break doesn't "officially" end until this week.

Teachers have been setting up their classrooms. Maintenance staff has been making the buildings clean and fresh, and training has been conducted to get new teachers up to speed on school procedures.

For students, the first day of school is approaching.

School start dates are:

Tuesday, Aug. 12: Culver, John Glenn, LaVille
Wednesday, Aug. 13: Plymouth, Triton
Thursday, Aug. 14: Argos
Monday, Aug. 18. Bremen
