Knox woman jailed on murder charge

STARKE — Police have jailed a Starke County woman, Kathleen Holt, 51, for the Feb. 13 shooting death of her boyfriend, Ron Worker, 46.
The incident happened at about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday afternoon at 1740 S. 550 E. in Knox.
Starke County Sheriff's deputies were called to the scene after Holt reportedly phoned 911 to say that she had shot Worker.

Plymouth Board votes to give VTAC space in Old Firehouse

PLYMOUTH - The Veterans Theraputic Art Center will have its first home.
VTAC received approval from the Plymouth Board of Public Works and Safety to call the upstairs of the Old Firehouse building their new home.
Larry Balmer of VTAC came before the board with a lease agreement worked out with Plymouth City Attorney Sean Surrisi that would lease the space to the group as a base of operations, place to display art work, to hold some smaller art classes and give a meeting space for veteran related activities.

New property tax assessment could have bigger impact on the city

PLYMOUTH - Residents of Plymouth could be in for a surprise in their tax bill for the coming year.
Plymouth Clerk-Treasurer Toni Hutchings gave some numbers to the Plymouth Common Council Monday that point to what could be a difficult tax season. Marshall County had a reassessment of property in 2012 for taxes to be paid in 2013. The reassessment is the first in Indiana since 2002. The numbers coming back have given Hutchings a reason for concern.
The property tax rate for residents of the city of Plymouth will jump from 2.5448 to 2.8582 per $100 of assessed value.

Plymouth HS Band Members Advance to State Finals

KOKOMO - The Plymouth High School Band was looking golden at this year’s Indiana State School Music Association’s solo and ensemble district competition on Saturday.
Plymouth students took a total of fifty-four solo and ensemble participants to the event. Each event is given a rating of a Gold, Silver, Bronze, or Participation. Fifty of the events from Plymouth High School earned a Gold Award and four of the events earned a Silver Award. None of the events from Plymouth earned a Bronze or Participation Award.

Promotion of city is goal with new website

PLYMOUTH — Updated information for both current and prospective city residents can now be found on Plymouth’s new website, www.plymouthin.com.
The site launched Feb. 1, and Mayor Mark Senter said the goal is to promote the city.
“The website is a big improvement from what the city has had for the last 10 years or so,” said Senter.
He said that the community links page will probably be the most used part of the site.

Markley accepts offer to join Argos police force

ARGOS – The Argos Town Council met in regular session Wednesday and heard a report from town attorney Derek Jones that the town had successfully bid on the property at 313 N. Grove Street, and now owns the lot. The property, sold at a foreclosure auction, will protect the town’s interest in back taxes due.
During citizen input, Charlie Howard complimented the town departments for the services they provide. He also lifted up Russell Wagers, a local resident, for voluntary and unheralded work replacing gravel at the cemetery.

Woman arrested for sexual misconduct with 15-year-old

On Jan. 29, Detective Sgt. Leo Mangus with the Plymouth Police Department received information regarding possible sexual activity between a 15 year old male and a 29 year old female named Lisa Tincher.
The 15 year old male was located and provided details regarding the sexual activity.
Tincher was located on Tuesday and admitted to sexual activity with the 15 year old that had occurred in October 2012 in Plymouth.

Four-legged Argos grad Mileigh completes leader dog training

Editor’s note: This is a first-person account by 2012 Argos graduate Ally Rospopo. Rospopo’s senior project while at Argos was to work with Mileigh a puppy raiser before the dog complete leader dog training. Rospopo’s senior project was previously featured in the Pilot News.

When an Argos senior graduates, this is usually the completion of his or her senior project, but for me the journey continued.

Culver park board nixes beer tasting event, hires programming director

The Culver park board's vote as to whether to allow a beer tasting event in the town park came down to an even 50-50 split, but the lack of a majority of favorable votes equaled a "no."

The decision came after lengthy -- and sometimes heated -- discussion between representatives of the proposed event, Evil Czech Brewery owner George Pesek and brewery manager Shawn Erikson, and the park board and audience.
