Morning Crash Claims Life

Marshall County – Shortly after 8:30 a.m. this morning, state police officers and rescue personnel from Marshall County responded to an accident on US 31 and 4A Road that claimed the life of a Plymouth woman. Police and rescue personnel arrived on the scene to find a 1999 Ford Escort in the ditch west of US 31 and a 2011 Jeep Laredo in the center median.

Local Eagles’ ‘2nd Chance Prom’ set for March 2

PLYMOUTH — Miss out on your prom? Or was it a night to forget?
Maybe you had so much fun you’d want to do it again.
Either way the Plymouth Eagles is offering its “2nd Chance Prom” March 2.
The event will take place at the Eagles, 404 W. Laporte St., Plymouth.
This is the second such prom held by the Eagles.
Hollie Wenzel, Vice President of the Eagle’s Ladies Auxiliary, said last year’s was a resounding success.
Proceeds from the event will go to Rupert’s Kids. The charity was started by “Survivor” contestant and former Indiana gubernatorial candidate Rupert Boneham.

Former Whitley workers will get help in transition

INDIANAPOLIS - The filing of a WARN notice by Whitley Products may signal the ultimate end of the company but by doing so workers will have at least a little help.
The Federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) act was passed in 1988 and part of that law requires that companies that have 100 or more employees file a 60 day notice of any plant closing or mass layoff. The notice is given to employees and filed with the Indiana Department of Work Force Development.

50 students make up Triton’s largest Destination ImagiNation group ever

BOURBON — This weekend you have the opportunity to see a preview of Triton students’ Destination ImagiNation challenges before the March 9 regional competition.
“The kids are pretty much going to run through what they will do at the regional tournament,” said Lisa Eiser, DI coordinator at Triton Schools. “So many people don’t understand Destination ImagiNation
we hope that by letting the public see what we do, they will understand it more.”

Whitley files WARN notice to “likely permanently” close

PLYMOUTH - It’s official - for now at least.
Whitley Products has officially filed notice as part of the Federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) act that the company based in Warsaw, with plants in Plymouth and North Carolina will officially cease operations.
The notice filed on Tuesday, states that Whitley “...has decided to notify its employees that in light of its current financial situation Whitley will likely permanently cease its operations,” and that “...in the event of a cessation of operations all employees will be terminated.”

Health care No. 2 in workplace injuries

PLYMOUTH — When you think of a dangerous work environment, a hospital probably isn’t the first place that pops into your mind.
But the Indiana Department of Labor released statistics earlier this month that point to health care as having the second highest worker injury and illness rates in the state. The DOL launched a statewide safety program to reduce some of these issues February 5.

Triton to host ‘Camp Invention’ during summer

BOURBON — Triton Elementary School is hosting a summer learning opportunity for students in grades K-5. Camp Invention, a week-long day camp will be June 3-7.
“This camp has gained a great reputation around our area as an outstanding opportunity for students to explore their love for science in a hands-on, practical learning environment,” said Triton Elementary principal Jeremy Riffle.

PLYMOUTH — This weekend, Showland Cinemas will show its first family movie since Christmas. It will be a relief for owner Dave Kinney, who said that business has been down recently because of lack of family-friendly flicks.
“We’ve been struggling a lot for the past month and a half because for some reason Hollywood has been on this kick of R-rated, violent movies,” said Kinney. “That’s just not small town fare.”

Plymouth man charged with baseball bat attack
PLYMOUTH — A Plymouth man was jailed Thursday afternoon and charged with aggravated battery after he allegedly struck a man with a baseball bat.
Plymouth police were dispatched to a fight at 707 Pearl St. in Plymouth.
Upon arrival, a 55-year-old Plymouth man was found to have a large wound to the back of his head from being hit by a baseball bat. A 36-year-old Plymouth man also had marks to the side of his head.
After speaking to all the subjects involved, Scott Davis was taken into custody.

Bond denied for woman accused of Knox murder

STARKE — Kathleen Holt, 51,of Knox, was officially charged Friday for the Feb. 13 murder of Ron Worker, 46. Appearing before Judge Kim Hall in Starke Circuit Court, Holt was unemotional as Judge Hall read the charges – “count one of murder by a handgun shot to the chest resulting in death,” which carries a 45- to 55-year sentence. She plead not guilty.
