Plymouth area weather warning sirens not working

MARSHALL COUNTY — Residents in the Plymouth area are being advised to find an alternate source for severe weather information instead of relying on the warning sirens.

Emergency Management Director Clyde Avery said two of the siren warning systems are not working and in light of the severe weather that is forecast for the region, people need to make other arrangements.

MARSHALL COUNTY — The following information was posted by the Marshall County Sheriff's office regarding the potential for severe weather beginning this afternoon.

The National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center has placed most of Northern Indiana under a moderate risk of severe weather for this afternoon and tonight.

The primary threat expected is damaging winds with gusts that could be in excess of 70mph. We could also see large hail, heavy rain (up to 2-3 inches) and have a medium potential for tornado activity.

Local woman running for a cause

PLYMOUTH — Local Crystal Hutchings had only aspired to be like her parents. Having admired her mother and father running before her, she was determined to do the same as early as age 6.

“It took me awhile to be as passionate about running as I am now,” admits Hutchings.

Hutchings will be making her way to the Mohican 100, a trail run referred to as the MO100 one of the nation’s premier ultra-marathons spanning through Mohican Memorial State Forest in Ohio.

She will be dedicating the run to the Be The Match Foundation.

More money needed to pay for lawyers, jail inmates

PLYMOUTH - There is at least one business in Marshall County that is booming - law enforcement.

The Marshall County Council heard a group of additional appropriation requests from both the courts and the Sheriff’s Department at their regular meeting on Monday.

Superior Court I Judge Robert Bowen came before the Council with a request for more money for “Pauper Council”. Each defendant in a court case has a constitutional right to a lawyer, and if the accused cannot afford one he is given a public defender, paid for by the county.

K9 chase leads to arrest

PLYMOUTH — A morning battery led to an investigation and arrest by afternoon with a wanted man in jail.

Plymouth Police received a call on Friday morning June 7 from St. Joseph Regional Medical Center regarding a battery victim being treated for injuries to the head and neck.

The victim provided a statement stating that the victim had been battered at the victim’s residence by Otis Young, 32, of Plymouth.
Young was also wanted on an open felony warrant for failing to appear on a possession of methamphetamine charge stemming from a Marshall County Sheriff’s Department arrest.

Health care mandates leading to policy changes

PLYMOUTH - The new public health care act will bring some changes in employment policy for Marshall County.

Meeting in a joint session on Monday the Marshall County Council and Marshall County Commissioners had Tony Nyers of the Healy Group, insurance brokers for the county, in Plymouth to walk them through new requirements that will have an affect on the county’s bottom line as concerning employee benefits.

•Margo Ann Wallace, 47 of Plymouth was arrested by Plymouth Police at 8:50 a.m. on June 7 for battery resulting in bodily injury, neglect of a dependent bodily injury.
•Joshua Aaron Palmer, 26, of Plymouth was arrested by Marshall County Sheriff's Department at 10 a.m. on June 7 for probation violation.
•Brandon Lee Riester, 39 of Plymouth was arrested by Marshall County Sheriff's Department at 10:20 a.m. on June 7 for operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

School districts find new teacher evaluation procedures challenging

MARSHALL COUNTY — As the school year closed at each of the seven school districts which serve Marshall County, students weren’t the only ones being evaluated for a final grade. Teachers were under scrutiny too.
It was part of the mandated teacher effectiveness evaluation imposed by state and federal regulations. While local school districts can develop their own set of criteria, most used the RISE evaluation and development system identified as the state model by the Indiana Department of Education.

MARSHALL COUNTY — Friday evening, Plymouth High School closed the chapter for the Class of 2013.

This was the 138th commencement for the school.

With the class motto of “Believe in the promise of tomorrow, but live this day to the fullest,” Plymouth High School’s more than 230 graduates filled the floor of the gymnasium with parents, family and friends filling the stands. Featured speaker was the class Valedictorian, Gabe Vervynckt.
