Young Rockies fall to NLC foe Goshen

December 4, 2010

PLYMOUTH — There were some good individual performances, and the young Rockies battled, but Plymouth's inexperience showed as it lost its Northern Lakes Conference opener to Goshen 46-18 Thursday.
Plymouth won just four bouts and gave up three pinfalls and three major decisions in the loss.
"They battled," said Plymouth head wrestling coach Bob Read. "One of the things that we've talked about is loving the battle. We have got to love the battle... and I thought our kids battled hard. We're young. We've got freshmen and sophomores in it who should be at a JV level. It's unfortunate, but they're competing."
Two of the Rockies wins came from veterans Damon Howe and Nathan Benham, at heavyweight and 171 pounds, respectively.
Howe, a returning state qualifier from last year, pinned Goshen's Hayden Schmucker in just over a minute, while Benham battled for a narrow 6-5 decision over Skylar Stevens to remain unbeaten on the year.
"Howe, you've got to expect he's going to do some damage for us," Read said. "He's got to do better, but right now he's working pretty hard at things.
"Nathan has a knack for finding a way to win, and if he does that he's going to help us out."
