Yeo leads Triton to 5th straight sectional title

March 3, 2012

BOURBON — Clay Yeo scored a game-high 30 points, highlighted by the game-winning bucket with 7 seconds left in the game, to carry Class A No. 51 Triton to a 56-55 victory over Marquette Catholic and its fifth straight boys basketball sectional title Saturday at The Trojan Trench.
Yeo, a 6-foot-6 junior, scored 16 of his team's 19 fourth-quarter points.
He hit his game-winner from 10 feet in the paint off an inbound lob from senior point guard Zak Shively.
"I was arguing with (head) coach (Jason) Groves about what play to run; I guess he was right," Yeo said. "It's a lob basically. Tanner (Shepherd) goes to the corner, and I try to go one on one with my man. Zak made a good pass, and I went up and got it."
Yeo also defended Marquette freshman Ryan Fazekas' last-ditch fadeaway from left of the lane with 3 seconds left.
"Clay wasn't going to be denied," Groves said. "He had a look in his eyes that the other kids sensed. I think Clay, with all the big games he's played, gets bored with certain situations. When the lights are on, like tonight, that's his time."
Triton (19-5) plays fourth-ranked Kouts (18-3) in the second semifinal in next Saturday's Triton Regional. Pioneer (19-5) plays the winner between Fort Wayne Blackhawk (8-15) and Fort Wayne Canterbury (16-6) in the opener.
