MARSHALL CO. — If your work commute takes you down U.S. 6, you might be caught in some traffic this week.
The Indiana Department of Transportation advised that work crews will be welding sections of the bridge for the new U.S. 31 over U.S. 6 between U.S. 31 and Lilac Road. This work will start Tuesday and continue through April 12.
“There will be intermittent traffic stops and flaggers directing traffic,” said Matt Deitchley, media relations director for INDOT’s LaPorte District. “Any traffic stops will be very brief. From a safety standpoint, we don’t want things dropping on the cars below.”
Depending on when the work is actually being done, motorists may experience no difficulties on the road. Deitchley said that the longest delay would probably be no more than a couple of minutes.
He added that the bridge over this section of U.S. 6 is one of the four interchanges for the new U.S. 31 highway. It will be fall of 2014 before the road is completed, and area residents can expect to see workers at the site for at least that long.
“At this point we are planning on opening the entire new U.S. 31 at the same time,” said Deitchley. “There may be other traffic restrictions, but we will make sure (people) know about them.”
He added that no detour has been planned for the work starting this week since traffic stops would be minor.
“There will not be an extended closure (of the road) where we would need a detour,” said Deitchley.
