Woolfington golf outing continues as honor to a friend

June 7, 2013

PLYMOUTH — Keeping a friend’s memory alive is a powerful thing.
Five years ago a pair of friends started making good on a promise to another. Mark Lindsey and Tony Plothow promised their buddy Craig Woolfington — dying of cancer — that they would make certain his daughter Kate had a chance to go to college.
Over $40,000 later, Woolfington’s memory is kept alive in more than just his daughter. Lindsey and Plothow have also worked with the Marshall County Community Foundation to offer a Plymouth High School student the yearly Craig Woolfington Scholarship, as well as make a substantial donation to Purdue University each year earmarked for cancer research in their friend’s name.
Once again this year, Craig and all his friends will be present at the Plymouth Country Club to honor his memory with the Craig Woolfington Memorial Golf Outing on July 12 beginning at 11:30 a.m.
“I’ve been a part of a lot of these kind of outings and they are great, but usually they last a year or two and the energy runs out,” said Pat Bayley of the Plymouth Country Club, host of this year’s event. “This one is going on five, and it seems to be gaining energy. I think that speaks a lot to Craig himself and to those who cared about him.”
“The thing that gets me is to watch Kate (Woolfington’s daughter) out here swinging a club,” said Lindsey. “It really just reminds us all how much Craig lives on in this outing and how much it means to everybody. It’s just a day when everybody gets together and you always hear over and over, ‘Craig would have loved that,’ or ‘That’s how Craig would have wanted it.’”
There will be prizes for golfers and also lunch and dinner served during the day’s round. Teams of four golfers can sign up for a cost of $320 or $80 per golfer. There will also be a silent auction of items for the entire day. Young’s TV has donated a 55 inch 3D LCD TV that will be raffled off with tickets being sold at Young’s TV in Plymouth and from Lindsey or Plothow.
For more information to register a team or be involved you can call Lindsey at 574-209-1014 or email prairieview_mr.lindsey@yahoo.com.
