Weekend car chase ends with drug arrest for Elkhart man
MARSHALL CO. — Details on a car chase last weekend were released Thursday.
An Elkhart man was jailed Saturday after evading police in two counties before officers apprehended and allegdly found drugs on him.
On Saturday Sept. 29 at approximately 12:16 a.m., Marshall County Police Officer Kerry Brouyette was patrolling on U.S. 31 north of Kenilworth Road when he observed a passenger car traveling at a high rate of speed.
Brouyette clocked the vehicle at a speed of 96 m.p.h. in a 60 m.p.h. posted speed zone. Brouyette then attempted to catch the vehicle to initiate a traffic stop. The vehicle accelerated and continued to travel southbound on U.S. 31 failing to stop for Brouyette.
The vehicle continued into Fulton County at which time Fulton County Officers were notified to assist. Once in Fulton County the vehicle then attempted to turn onto CR700 North to elude Brouyette, but due to the high rate of speed the vehicle was traveling, the vehicle could not negotiate the turn and went off the roadway and down an embankment. The vehicle then came back up out of the embankment and onto the roadway where Brouyette was able to get the vehicle stopped. The driver was placed into custody.
During the investigation, Fulton County K-9 unit Deputy Travis Heishman was on scene assisting, at which time the K-9 made a positive alert on the vehicle for the presence of narcotics. Brouyette along with Fulton County K-9 unit Heishman located marijuana and paraphernalia inside the vehicle. Brouyette then located additional marijuana inside the vehicle.
The driver Hayden Kruger, 20, of Elkhart, was transported and lodged into the Marshall County Jail on preliminary charges of: Reckless Driving, Resisting Law Enforcement, Possession of Marijuana, Possession of Marijuana with the intent to distribute, Possession of Paraphernalia, Possession of a Controlled Substance and Minor Consumption. Kruger received a bond set at $3,000.
