Wakarusa council discusses fate of historic building
WAKARUSA - It did not take long for members of the Wakarusa Town Council to arrive at a decision as to whether they should purchase a historic but dilapidated building. During a brief session held Tuesday evening, the answer was unequivocally no.
The building, situated along the 100 block of South Elkhart Street, has stood just south of the downtown square for nearly a century, and with its age comes a slew of maintenance issues. Most recently, Dollar General had a facility located there, until the business moved into a spacious new structure on SR 19 a year ago. Since the store's departure, the building has been marketed for sale or lease by LP Real Estate, but according to Town Manager Jeff Troxel, interest from prospective buyers has been virtually nonexistent.
