First H1N1 clinic moves smoothly

By Rusty Nixon Correspondent
PLYMOUTH — For most it is a strange sight to see. Literally hundreds of children, lined up down the block from an elementary school hoping to get a shot.
That was the unlikely scene at Washington School in Plymouth last night as The Marshall County Health Department held its first H1N1 flu shot clinic. In spite of the large numbers that turned out and the trickle of vaccine into the county, the department didn’t have to turn anyone away. Everyone who came received an inoculation.

Tyler and Barry “Bubby” Garab

By Carol Anders Correspondent
HAMLET — A parent’s and grandparent’s worst nightmare was averted last Thursday night by the quick actions of 12-year-old Tyler Garab when the house he lived in was gutted by fire.
Two fire departments, Hamlet and Koontz Lake, responded to the fire on 500 North in Hamlet, but were unable to save the structure; however, the occupants were able to escape.
According to Tyler’s grandmother, Trina Bianco, Tyler rescued his 4-year-old brother Barry (“Bubby”) by carrying him down the steps from an upstairs rooms.

Bianco said, “He had Bubby put his face into his chest and told him to hold his breath.”
Bianco said the boys had some singed hair and eyelashes, but were otherwise spared.
She said, “Tyler, a student at Oregon-Davis School, was upset because his backpack was burned up and it was full of his homework.”
Bianco said the fire started in a bedroom that was not being used at the bottom of the stair steps.
According to Bianco, her daughter Rebecca Cromey was renting the home but did not have renter’s insurance.
Cromey had been in the process of painting several rooms in the house and had just finished the dining room and a bathroom Thursday night, according to Bianco.
Bianco added, “Bubby is a very curious little guy,” saying that he apparently had disappeared for a little while prior to the fire, but it is not clear where he was in the house.
According to Koontz Lake Fire Chief Randy Collins, the fire is under investigation by the Indiana State Fire Marshall.
