PLYMOUTH — The Friends of the Library held the 14th annual Quiz Bowl Monday.
The competition, which lasted longer than two-and-a-half hours, was won by members of the CHAPC team captained by Dan Shuppert. They were playing on behalf of the Center of Hospice and Palliative Care.
The CHAPC team consisted of Shuppert, Dr. Jon Kubley, Dennis Beville, and Dave Haley.

Shuppert has been a counselor for Hospice for the past eight years. He first became acquainted with the services when his father was placed under the care of Hospice. Dr. Kubley is the full-time physician for the Center and Haley is a staff member from the Hospice located in South Bend. Beville is completing his training to become a volunteer for the organization.
Shuppert said of his team’s victory, “It was fun. It was all a matter of what questions you got.”
He added, “Everyone of the team contributed, but Dr. Jon was our experienced member.”
Fortunately, the team was given two or three questions related to the medical field.
Dr. Kubley confidently and correctly answered a question concerning a bone in the throat known as the hyboid bone.
Runner-ups were the team captained by Judy Goebel.
Judy Goebel’s teammates including Dave Goebel, Scott Heckaman, and Steve Jacobson have vowed to try to recruit a doctor for the next competition. Judy Goebel, Dave Goebel and Scott Heckaman are all realtors with ReMax. Jacobson works at Valmont and is married to a realtor for ReMax. The team also had an advantage since Judy Goebel is a former English teacher.
Obviously, the team had some medical knowledge of their own when they correctly responded to what the acronym DNA represents.
Other teams participating included: Ancilla Chargers, the Producers, the Optimizers, St. Mike’s Rectory Brains, Bankers with Sense, Knights of Columbus, Martin’s-Mind Busters and Rotary Rooters.
Although the organizers of the event, Amy Gerard and Lisa Miller, had scheduled the competition for two nights, they were able to name a winner on the first night.
The proceeds from the event will be used for various projects at the library.
