By Rusty Nixon Correspondent PLYMOUTH — The town of LaPaz will be the home to at least 14 more people soon. Congressman Joe Donnelly was in town to hand over a grant of more than $1.6 million to the town to build its first Garden Court Apartments complex. LaPaz Clerk-Treasurer Jane Harris had even more good news for those in attendance with a grant check from the Marshall County Community Foundation that will pay for the city’s portion of the project. “This project is everything that we are trying to accomplish in the country,” Donnelly told those in attendance. “It’s going to be creating jobs; it will provide homes and a quality of life for those who need it.”
The town began trying to secure funds for the project nearly two years ago, but were turned down on one occasion. That’s when Donnelly’s office became involved. “What I appreciate about Congressman Donnelly is that he doesn’t forget about the small towns,” said Harris. “Big towns need money too, but projects like this are very important to small towns. It’s nice not to be forgotten.” “LaPaz is such a great town,” said Donnelly. “It’s good to be able to make a difference in the lives of more people in Marshall County. This is a win, win all the way around. It’s easy to sell a good product.” LaPaz Town Council member Don Ecker was also pleased about the coming project. “We started trying to make this happen about two years ago,” he said. “We’re just very happy to have it finally happen. This (Garden Court) is such a great organization to work with and we’re very happy to have them here in LaPaz.” Garden Court Apartments has 10 facilities around Marshall County providing affordable housing for the elderly. Board President Ron Leichty says that while the group provides housing for over 300 people currently there is a large waiting list for apartments. The complex in LaPaz will have 14 units.
