PLYMOUTH — Veteran journalist Anita Munson of Plymouth will join The Pilot News Group in an advertising consultant/special projects capacity, Rick Kreps, publisher, announced today. Munson has lived in Plymouth since the beginning of her nearly nine-year ten-ure with The South Bend Tribune, her former employer. For the past seven years, she has covered news in Marshall and surrounding counties, as well as Plymouth city government. “I’m excited about the opportunity to continue to serve Marshall County in a new way with the Pilot News,” Munson said. “I’m looking forward to working with business owners to help them maximize opportunities in a period of economic challenges. We have creative solutions that will bring positive results to our friends and neighbors.” Pilot News Group Publisher Kreps said Munson’s multi-faceted newspaper background is a perfect fit for Marshall County’s daily newspaper.
“Anita has all the tools to help local businesses with advertising and marketing to our daily readership of nearly 15,000,” said Kreps. “Additionally, in her special projects capacity, Anita will be a tremendous asset to our operation. She’ll be a great help to our many advertising partners, and readers will be seeing her byline reporting. I know Anita is as excited about this opportunity as we are.” Munson will be visiting Marshall County businesses in coming days to discuss their needs and aspirations. Among her first newsroom projects will be a weekly Business page column that will debut Saturday, Jan. 24. Although her journalistic achievements are many – her ability to cut to the heart of complicated issues in a fair and honest way is well known – Munson’s experience in business and advertising, as well as special promotions mean she brings an appreciation of business owners’ concerns, Kreps pointed out. Earlier in her career, she helped keep an Angola manufacturer five years ahead of Environmental Protection Agency regulations and potential punitive actions; wrote a profit-sharing program that reduced costly employee turn-over, and produced and marketed a hazardous materials training program that was used extensively across the fiberglass fabrication industry nation-wide. Certified as a fiberglass emergency first responder, she served on several industry round-tables covering the costs of plant safety. As a journalist, her beats over the years have included covering news in the RV industry, the changing relationship between General Motors Corp./Ford Motor Co. and the United Auto Workers in both Indiana and Georgia, and investigating the shift in production of rare earth magnets from America to China. Her newspaper reporting concentrated in Central and Northeastern Indiana, and most recently in the South Bend region. As an advertising and marketing specialist, she has produced fashion shows to benefit the scholarship program of Altrusa Club International, assisted in a special “Stand Down” to clothe and provide needed medical attention for more than 100 homeless or needy military veterans in an event that featured former Miss America Heather French, and coordinated customer appreciation events for industry. She supervised efforts on a Hoosier State Press Association Blue Ribbon Award-winning special publication in Angola featuring the stories of the area’s small businesses, and has received numerous awards from Woman’s Press Club of Indiana for both journalism and advertising efforts. “Marshall County is a great place to live and work,” Munson said. “Friendships and trusted working relationships are so important, and the sense of community is really strong here. We are blessed with beautiful geography and people willing to do what it takes to insure continued growth and prosperity.”
