The passenger side of one of the Bremen Police Departments cars was destroyed when an officer responding to a call for another accident hit a patch of black ice and slid off the road. Pilot photos/Mandy McFarland

By Mandy McFarland Staff Writer
BREMEN — Two accidents within two weeks have destroyed one of the Bremen Police Department’s newest squad cars and badly damaged the other.
Last Sunday, Jan. 4,  Kenny A. McIntyre of Tippecanoe was driving his Chevy Trialblazer eastbound on 2B Road around 7:45 a.m. when he hit a patch of ice and lost control. His vehicle slid from the road and rolled onto its side off the south side of the road, striking a utility pole and trapping McIntyre inside.

According to Bremen Police Chief Matt Hassel, Bremen officer Nicolas Spaid was responding to the call when his squad car struck a patch of black ice, also spinning out of control before slamming into the side of a nearby garage.
Spaid was buckled in and his airbag deployed. He received treatment at the Bremen Hospital for a small cut to the left hand and pain in his left knee.
The squad car was a total loss.
Friday, Dec. 26
Two weeks earlier, at approximately 7:58 a.m. Friday, Dec. 26, another Bremen officer was responding to an accident call at U.S. 6 east of S.R. 106 when a vehicle lost control and slid into his squad car.
No one was injured in the incident, but the squad car suffered a massive dent to the back driver’s side. The damage is fixable.
Hassel urges drivers to use caution when traveling in winter weather.
“You just really want to slow down,” he said. “And you have to be aware you can’t see the ice at all times.”
He cautions drivers to postpone early morning travel in the winter time and to give the plows, sand trucks and the sun plenty of time to melt the ice.
