NAPPANEE — It took six fire departments nearly six-and-a-half hours to put out a blaze that completely destroyed a barn on West 200 North outside of Nappanee yesterday afternoon.
The call went out at approximately 2:14 p.m. The Nappanee Fire Department initially responded, but had to call for backup from Bremen, Wakarusa, Foraker, Bourbon and Etna Green.

According to Nappanee Fire Chief Tom Anglin, no one was injured in the blaze. However, several dogs were lost, including one that had just given birth to a litter of five puppies.
No other animals were in the barn at the time.
Anglin said that the fire is believed to be accidental, though firefighters were unable to find a cause.
“As much devastation as there is we’ll probably never know,” Anglin said. Weather may have been a contributing factor to the intensity of the blaze.
“Probably wind fueled the fire,” Anglin said, “but any time you’ve got a barn like this, you’re lucky if you can save it.”
Firefighters had the blaze under control by 3:44 p.m., but continued fighting it until approximately 7:06 p.m.
