Former Jellystone manager court case continues E-mail
Wednesday, 31 December 2008
By Carol Anders Staff Writer
PLYMOUTH — Property owners at Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park Camp-Resort on U.S. 30 in Plymouth are still awaiting the outcome of criminal charges against the park’s former manager, Edward Soike.
Soike had been employed as the manager from late 2005, ending in the summer of 2007.
Soike was charged in January of 2008 with Class C felony theft, stemming from alleged embezzlement of funds from the park.
In August of 2007, the president of the Jellystone Park Board contacted the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office in regard to an embezzlement complaint.
According to court records, Soike had extensive control over money flowing in to and out of the park’s bank accounts.
An audit performed by an accounting firm determined that the cash loss to the park was in excess of $116,000.
A warrant for his arrest was issued Jan. 23, 2008. Soike turned himself in to authorities that same day and was later released on his own recognizance. Bail had been fixed in the amount of $100,000 surety or $20,000 cash.
Court records alleged that Soike made numerous trips to Las Vegas and Michigan City. “Records were obtained ... showing Mr. Soike to have gambling loss during the first eight months of 2007 in excess of $20,000.”
A status hearing had been scheduled in Marshall County Superior Court I Oct. 16, 2008; but prior to the hearing, the matter was continued.
At this point, a pre-trial conference is scheduled for Jan. 21 at 8:30 a.m.
