DONALDSON — In its final two games before Christmas break, the Ancilla College women’s basketball team traveled to the Detroit metro area for two non-conference games. In their first game of the weekend, Ancilla (7-6) upset perennial power Oakland Community College 64-58. Their second game found the Chargers struggling to overcome Henry Ford Community College 72-63.
Against Oakland (6-3), Ancilla’s 3-point shooting turned out to be the difference. The Lady Chargers shot 7-for-17 (41.2 percent) from behind the arc, while holding the host Raiders to 1-of-12 (8.3 percent) from the same locale. Lauren Shepherd, one of the top 20 scorers in the nation, led Ancilla with 20 points, while pulling down seven rebounds and grabbing two steals. Bianca Woods was held to just six points, but led Ancilla with 11 rebounds and three steals. Sophia Baldwin (15 points) and Anyae Coffer (12 points) pitched in with double-digit totals. Both Baldwin and Coffer finished with seven rebounds. Ancilla was outshot 91-79, but used 66 rebounds and 41.8 percent shooting to overcome the pesky Hawks from Henry Ford (1-4). Woods led Ancilla on the boards, pulling down 20, and accomplished a double-double by scoring 14 points. Shepherd again led the Lady Chargers in scoring (27 points) and assists (8). Baldwin drained 18 points and missed a double-double by one rebound, finishing with nine.
