Taste of the tropics warms up church E-mail
Friday, 09 March 2007
KNOX — After months of patiently waiting for the hot sun and warm breezes of summer, the youth groups of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Knox hosted a family event to warm up the cold days of March.
On Sunday, March 4, the youth of Our Redeemer hosted a tropical Hawaiian Luau for church members and the community. The luau included a huge buffet of tropical treats, hula lessons and dancing, adult and childrens’ games, a display of photos and souvenirs from Hawaii, an indoor pond with a fountain, a contest of limbo skills and a tiki hut for family photographs.
Lisa and Janyl Zilinski of Knox taught everyone how to do a traditional hula dance. Children and adults alike participated in the session. Both girls have taken Polynesian-style dance classes at Sandra Lee Studio of Dance.
Games for the children included Dolphin Ring Toss, Fishing, Velcro Dart Balls, Pin the Monkey on the Palm Tree, and more. Children were also treated to face-painting and packets of treats.

Adult games included Hawaiian Bingo and several trivia games.
The limbo contest was won by third grader Ryan Scherf and sixth grader Jordan Campbell.
The event filled the new Family Life Center and was attended by dozens of families. The luau ran from 5 to 8 p.m. and was an event enjoyed by everyone that attended.
The church youth also recently held a Valentine’s Day dinner for couples, serving as hosts and waiters, preparing and serving the meal. The youth dressed in formal black and white clothing and treated the adults to an evening of dinner and dancing.
Our Redeemer Lutheran Church hosts traditional services on Saturday at 5 p.m. and Sunday at 8:30 a.m. The modern-style contemporary service is on Sunday at 11 a.m. and features a praise band. For more information, contact Director of Christian Education Diane Cruz, at 772-4186.
