Pilot photo/jeff kenney Jeff Krieg, right, shows Culver-Union Twp. Public Library director Colleen Carpenter the bell from the Maxinkuckee tour boat, an item he has donated to the Antiquarian and Historical Society of Culver for its Center for Culver History, located in the original Carnegie portion of the library.
The Maxinkuckee, piloted for decades by Captain Frank Amond, was a beloved fixture on the lake for hundreds — if not thousands — of enthusiastic passengers, who reveled in Amond’s colorful tales of lake life past and present. Krieg says he obtained the bell after the boat’s 1978 docking on the north shore of the lake, showing it to a wistful Amond, who thought the bell was at the bottom of the lake. Krieg says he wants to share the bell as an heirloom of so many good memories to so many in the area.
