By Mandy McFarland Editor NAPPANEE — The Nappanee Redevelopment Commission heard updates on several in-progress projects at their last meeting Monday, Oct. 28 at the Nappanee Center. Property appraised The property at 160 N. Main St. has received two appraisals. The first was from A.M. Appraisals out of Bremen for $57,000 and the second was from Hahn Auctioneers, Inc. of Nappanee for $60,000. According to redevelopment commission director Larry Andrews, the state of Indiana requires two appraisals, and the property is sold for the average of the two. No definite plans have been made for the property.
Quilt gardens planned The designs for the 2009 quilt gardens have been chosen. The garden at McCormick Creek Golf Course will be titled "Recovery" and will contain purple, red, yellow and green as the color theme. In accordance with rules that the Elkhart County Convention and Visitors Bureau set forth concerning the project, the quilt stamp murals must be placed in a new location for 2009. The commission chose the side of the building owned by Russell Miller, where all four murals will be on display from Memorial Day until the first frost. Plans are in the works for the now-bare spots in the alleyways where the stamp murals hung this past summer. According to Andrews, the commission had already obtained grant money to place old-fashioned lighting above the murals. The commission still plans to go through with the project but with what Andrews is calling "heritage murals" that will be in keeping with Nappanee's overall Embrace the Pace theme. Other news •The commission is still in the process of trying to gain control over the property on East Market Street currently belonging to Amoco. Andrews composed a letter to Nappanee's city attorney Brian Hoffer suggesting that commission attorney Craig Buche handle the project from a different perspective. •Buggy shed repairs and repainting have been underway. Two scheduled work days were rained out and one commenced as planned. The work has been done completely on a volunteer basis. •Following an initial meeting concerning Nappanee's historic sign ordinance, a second meeting has been planned for an undecided date. •Work is still underway to raise funds for the Nappanee Theatre Marquee restoration project. Andrews suggested obtaining an available match grant in which the commission would receive $6,000 and raise a $6,000 match to put toward the project.
