By Dee Grenert Sports Editor ARGOS — Argos’ Kelsie Hollabaugh long ago proved her ability to score on the soccer field. She knows a thing or two about distributing the ball as well. Hollabaugh, the Dragons’ all-time girls soccer scoring leader, booted career goals 100 and 101, and also assisted Kyla Van Der Weele and Staci O’Dell in host Argos’ 4-0 sectional semifinal win over LaVille at Eugene Snyder Field Thursday. With the victory, defending sectional champion Argos advanced to Saturday night’s final round against Culver Girls Academy.
“Kelsie’s got 101 goals, and I don’t know how many assists,” Argos head coach Jon Alcorn said. “She’s just a good, unselfish player. Her pass to Van Der Weele for the first goal was very sweet.” On that tally, Hollabaugh sent a cross from the right to Van Der Weele in the 5th minute for an early 1-0 lead. In the 26th minute, Hollabaugh broke free for a long run down the left side, leaving LaVille keeper Erica Schmeltz defenseless against the Argos standout’s 100th career strike. “We were marking up their players pretty good,” Schmeltz said. “Kelsie is fast. She got free and scored.” The Dragons put the game away with two quick second-half goals. Kassi Hensley connected with Hollabaugh in the 46th minute, and less than two minutes later, Hollabaugh passed ahead to a moving Staci O’Dell, who beat a defender and polished off the final goal of the night from 15 yards. “It was a good game for us,” Alcorn said. “LaVille’s a good side. I thought our passing was good; we made some great passes. Offensively, we moved very well. I liked the way we were weaving back and forth, changing lanes. We weren’t always moving forward. We backed up when we needed to and made soft passes.” Defensively, the Dragons allowed LaVille and Indiana State recruit Abby Davis a total of two shots on goal. Argos’ possession game made Davis, a high-scoring senior midfielder, almost a non factor. “We decided we were not going to mark (Davis), a lot of teams mark her,” Alcorn said. “We decided to play team defense. We used a lot of young players, and we wanted them to play the ball back. Our goal defensively was not to give them breakaways. And the Dragons achieved that objective. “They put ones and twos around us, that’s pretty much how it went,” LaVille senior midfielder Marci Gurtner said. “(Argos) handled the ball well. They made good passes to the feet.” In addition to his team’s defense, Alcorn also liked the way sophomore keeper Katelynn Zechiel handled her job. “Katelynn Zechiel had a good game in goal,” Alcorn added. “She made a few pick ups that if she hadn’t would have turned into tough plays. That’s big for a sophomore.” LaVille now must bid farewell to a strong group of seniors in Davis, Gurtner, Schmeltz, Jessica Heston and Stevie Vidmar “I don’t think we were up for it tonight,” LaVille head coach Steve Hodge said. “You could tell before the game. It’s been a tough season. I lost my entire backfield to injuries, although they came back this week. Congratulations go to Argos. They deserved to win. “Also, thanks to our five seniors who’ve given everything they have for four years,” he added. “Tonight just wasn’t our night.” • ARGOS GIRLS SOCCER SECTIONAL At Argos Argos 4, LaVille 0 Halftime score: Argos 2, LaVille 0 FIRST HALF A — Kyla Van Der Weele (Kelsie Hollabaugh), 5th minute A — Hollabaugh, 26th minute SECOND HALF A — Hollabaugh (Kassi Hensley), 46th minute A — Staci O’Dell (Hollabaugh), 47th minute Shots on goal: Argos 10, LaVille 2.
