By Holly Heller Enquirer Editor BREMEN — In order to help meet pain intervention needs in the Bremen area, Community Hospital of Bremen has brought radiologist Sandra Roland, M.D. on board. Roland is one of 17 radiologists with X-Ray Consultants, a group that has partnered with Community Hospital for many years.
What is interventional radiology? “We use image guidance to do minor procedures,” Roland explained. She utilizes a variety of methods such as CT, ultrasound and X-rays for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. For example, she can perform an angiography to look at the blood flow in a patient’s legs or perform biopsies of a tumor with a small needle. “There are about 40 to 50 different types of procedures,” Roland said. One specialty area is pain intervention, or helping people find and treat the source of their pain. “Patients who are seeing physicians with pain management, this is a referral for that type of care. We can assess back pain and figure out the best treatment options,” Roland said. Hospital President/CEO Scott Graybill is excited to have Roland on board. “Having an on-site interventional radiologist who provides services to the county is a great addition to our team,” Graybill said. “We’re excited to have it here. It’s a great opportunity for us.” Roland completed her residency at Rush Presbyterian in Chicago and her fellowship at Northwestern. She is board certified in both radiology and interventional radiology. She worked in private practice for six years in Illinois and has been with X-Ray Consultants since February 2007. She is married and has a 2-year-old son. Roland is available at Community Hospital on Thursday mornings, but her time there could increase if there is enough patient demand. Patients may contact their family physician for a referral or call the Community Hospital Medical Office Suites directly at 574-546-8044.
