BY JOHN REED LEADER EDITOR A rash of burglaries recently, including three on the same day, Sept. 15, included a break-in at the home of Starke County Prosecutor Julienne Havens. In a significantly large theft on Sept. 10, thieves escaped with at least $25,000 worth of sports equipment, tools and more from the home of Anthony and Julie Manns on 350 South.
The largest item taken was a 2002 Raptor 4-wheeler valued at $4,000. A red scooter also was taken, but was recovered at the corner of 350 East and 350 South. Sporting equipment included a 12-gauge shotgun with scope, Carhart coveralls, five fishing poles and five reels, two bows, quivers of arrows with cases and sights, baseball supplies, helmets, four chain saws, two log splitters, a back pack, binoculars, two sets of golf clubs and much more. The items were taken from two barns. On Monday, Sept. 15, Starke County Prosecutor Julienne Havens reported that her house in Knox, had been broken into. Thieves escaped with a flat screen monitor with speakers and the tower, a flat screen TV, a two-foot-square safe on wheels and a smaller hand-held safe. Starke County Sheriff’s reports said the computer contained important records and the safe held valuable documents and coins. Value of the items was estimated at $1,650. Some areas of the home were ransacked and damage to the house was estimated at $1,000. An Indiana State Police (ISP) crime technician was called to the scene. On the same day, Christine Lovins reported a break-in at her son’s house on South 200 East. Taken were a PlayStation2 game, VCR, a gun safe, CD disc changer, a 19-inch TV, 100 CDs, a computer and a DVD player. Also taken were a saddle, bridle, knives, pool cues and cases, and medals and trophies. Value of the missing items was estimated at $1,850. Again on Sept. 15, a theft was reported at the Howard Bailey residence on South 250 East. Taken were a laptop computer, 13 guns, a TV, a jewelry box and $400 in cash, and video games. An ISP technician was called to investigate. On Sept. 17, Michael Lord of South 350 East reported the theft of a digital camera, flat screen monitor, plasma TV and jewelry Almost $4,000 worth of tools were taken in a Sept. 6 theft at the Paul Zerbe residence. Power staples, drill bits, sockets, two battery chargers, three chain saws, a rotary hammer and many other items were taken.
