By Rusty Nixon Correspondent PLYMOUTH – The city of Plymouth is getting in true festival spirit, getting on board with a new program for this year’s Marshall County Blueberry Festival.
This year the festival will make available areas for recycling during the four day event, calling the effort “Blue Goes Green”. Plymouth Mayor Mark Senter has announced that he will declare Friday “Blue Goes Green Day” in the city. Senter will be at Menominee Elementary with Marshall County Solid Waste Superintendent Mike Good on Friday morning presenting a program to students about recycling. He will use the occasion to officially make the proclamation. “This is something that we probably should have done a long time ago,” said Senter of the Festival’s effort to be eco-friendly. “This year we’re going to give it a shot and hopefully it catches on.” The city of Plymouth is no stranger to recycling but Senter feels that residents can go even further. “The city has a recycling program and one thing I noticed when I rode the garbage truck is that there really aren’t that many people recycling,” he said. “In any case we certainly could do more recycling. We throw a lot of things away that we shouldn’t.” Getting on board with the festival’s program is something Senter hopes will make all residents more aware of their impact on the environment. “It would be great if this can help get people more involved with recycling,” he said. “I hope it shows people how important it is to recycle as well as use more recycled products.”
