Plymouth buries Trinity E-mail
Wednesday, 27 August 2008
By James Costello Sports Writer
PLYMOUTH — Plymouth came out gunning with two goals in the first 12 minutes, then overcame a couple brief second-half defensive lapses, out-dribbling and out-passing Trinity for a dominant 8-2 home win Tuesday.
“I think we got a little disorganized in the back, a little goal-hungry at times, and they caught us not getting behind the ball,” said Plymouth boys soccer head coach Josh Martin. “They got a couple good breakaways that they ended up finishing out. I talked to our goalkeeper Lucas (Hill), and he said that he was dealing with some indecision on the line, not knowing whether he wanted to stay in or come out.. We kind of started switching our sweepers and our stoppers around. We were kind of losing our depth back there; our last man back was kind of getting flat with their last guy instead of kind of leaving a cushion there. I think we kind of kept them from getting any more looks back there after getting that second breakaway that they scored.”
Of course the Rockies had plenty of goals to spare. Plymouth delivered 16 shots on goal, and scored on half those as the home team combo-ed the visitors to death.
Junior forward Sean McClellan struck first with goals in the third and 12th minutes Tuesday. McClellan slipped his first shot in — off an assist from the wing by senior forward Alvaro Dorantes — around Trinity goalie Gabe Griggs after Griggs lost his footing in his own moment of indecision. McClellan struck again in the 12th weaving swiftly through three Titans defenders for a direct goal from inside the box to put the Rockies up 2-0.
“Sean’s gotten off to a really good start this year,” Martin said. “He’s got some wheels. He’s got some speed... He’s real hungry to get the ball in the goal.”
Dorantes recorded a goal of his own in the second half off an assist by Plymouth attacking mid Todd Vervynckt in the 78th minute, while Vervynckt followed up with another 78th minute goal on an unassisted break around Griggs to bring the score to its final. Vervynckt recorded a previous unassisted goal in the game’s 55th minute, after surviving a 1-on-4 situation alone in the penalty area to put Plymouth up 6-2.
“A lot of kids are going to panic. Things are going a million miles per second, and there’s a lot of bodies in there,” Martin said. “Todd’s the kind of kid he’s been in the pressure situations. He just kind of spun around, shook some guys, looks up and puts that ball in the goal. He’s an ice man.”
Following McClellan’s second goal, Plymouth stretched its lead to 3-0 on an own-goal when a shot by Eliseo Martinez off a Clayton Bright cross ricocheted off freshman Trinity midfielder Patrick Couch’s head and into the back of the Titan net. Martinez scored more directly with a bank off the near goal post to give the Rockies a 5-1 edge in the 46th minute. Plymouth’s Travis Lee scored the Rockies’ fourth goal in the 18th minute off a Jordan Knill assist.
The Rockies will start their Northern Lakes Conference season Thursday at home against Warsaw.
“They’re going to have a really organized defense; we’re not going to be able to go straight up and down the park with them,” Martin said. “We’ve got one more practice to get ready for them, and the guys are fired up. That’s one of our team goals. We want to make sure we beat those guys. They’ve had a strangle-hold on us for a few years. Last year in sectional was the first time we’ve beaten them. I think the guys are going to be ready.”
