If there are any shortcomings in Plymouth’s new defensive lineup, the Rockies offense didn’t give them a chance to manifest themselves Tuesday night. Plymouth hoarded possession of the ball for most of the 80 minutes in its season opener, running over visiting LaPorte and allowing just seven total shots by the Slicers in a 10-0 shutout.
“I didn’t necessarily want 10 goals. I don’t like running up the score at all, but at the same time every one of those goals was brilliant,” Feece said. “I loved the passing; I loved the combinations. The girls are doing what we ask them to do. I love the speed.” Speediest of all was forward Brandi Witmer, who recorded one of three unassisted Rockies goals to give Plymouth its second goal of the night in the sixth minute and assisted on two other goals by senior strikers KaLyn Hirschy and Tessa Parsons late in the first half. The junior attacker also blasted a pair of shots off the LaPorte crossbeam for two near-goals before the break. Parsons put the Rockies on the board in the fourth minute off a well-placed inbounds pass by Brittany Davis and an Erin Galt pass, and she assisted on Plymouth’s last goal of the night with a short cross to Krista Vanlue in the 77th minute. After the Rockies took a secure 7-0 lead in the first half, Feece brought in his subs for the game’s final 35 minutes, and the reserves still managed to score three goals while allowing just one shot on goal, a Tyler Erne direct shot that came dangerously close to slipping through the gloves of Rockies goalkeeper Nikki Butcher in the final minute Tuesday. Plymouth substitute midfielder Brea Whitmire scored on an assist by fellow sophomore Kendra Reininga in the 53rd minute, and 14 minutes later she shot a long cross that Reininga headed off LaPorte goalie Lacey Stout’s mitts and Katie Morrow booted in the rebound shot for Plymouth’s penultimate goal of the evening. “It was pretty evenly distributed, which makes me happy,” Feece said. “I loved to see Katie Morrow getting a goal. She came up off the JV last year. She was part of that second lineup that we had there, and she ended up having a goal off this beautiful cross by Brea Whitmire. Kendra (Reininga) heads the ball down like she’s supposed to at the goal, and then Katie was there to clean it up. “The thing that I was most happy with was in the second half I told the starting lineup you’ve got five minutes; do everything you can do in five minutes. They came out hard, and then the rest of the 11 that I put in in sub played for 35 minutes straight... You can’t ask for more dedication and guts than that. They worked their butts off to get there. That was the most pleasing thing all night.” Slicer goalkeeper Stout recorded seven saves after replacing LaPorte starting goalie Brandi Morrow in the 29th minute Tuesday. Morrow was benched after sustaining a kick to the head while sliding out to trap the ball during a break by Hirschy. Butcher recorded two saves at the game for Plymouth. Plymouth senior forward Samantha Scheetz scored a direct goal in the 34th minute but left the game early in the second half with a minor ankle injury. Feece said she’ll be ready to return when Plymouth takes on sectional rival Argos Thursday. “Sammy’s good. She got kicked in the ankle, and I think she got a little bit of a scare after breaking her leg twice in her high school career,” Feece ventured. “But we’re good. She’ll be ready for Argos.” The Rockies will need all their firepower in Thursday’s match-up at 5 p.m. at Argos. The Dragons topped Plymouth twice in two very close games last season and dropped the Rockies out of sectional play in the first round. “Hopefully we can continue the momentum,” Feece said. “We had a pretty good jamboree tonight, and we got the win against LaPorte. Let’s hope we get another win Thursday night against Argos, but that’ll be a tough challenge. It’s always competitive. The crowds get into it, the players get into it. It’s pretty entertaining. There’s always lots of energy and lots of emotion during the Argos games.” • PLYMOUTH 10, LAPORTE 0 At Plymouth 4th minute — P Tessa Parsons (Brittany Davis and Erin Galt) 6th minute — P Brandi Witmer 7th minute — P Kristin Calvert 21st minute — P Galt (KaLyn Hirschy) 34th minute — P Samantha Scheetz 35th minute — P Tessa Parsons (Witmer) 39th minute — P Hirschy (Witmer) 53rd minute — P Brea Whitmire (Kendra Reininga) 67th minute — P Katie Morrow (Reininga and Brea Whitmire) 77th minute — P Krista Vanlue (Parsons) Shots: Plymouth 40, LaPorte 7 Fouls: Plymouth 10, LaPorte 8 Records: Plymouth 1-0-0 JV Game PLYMOUTH 9, LAPORTE 0 JV Record: 1-0-0
