PLYMOUTH — This past weekend at the Plymouth Speedway was “Back to School Night at the Races.” The children showed up en masse attempting to enjoy a great night of racing.
The first event of the day was qualifying. The late models saw Michael Thayer set the pace with a time of 12.956. Derrick Griffin was the fastest competitor in the sportsmen division with a time of 14.817. Dave Long Junior set a new track record in the thundercar division with a time of 15.689.
Rich Boal picked up his first win of the night in his heat. The second heat for the late models went to Charlie Whitman.
Jeff Forsythe, Roger Rubino, and Gary Chapman were all victorious in their respective heat events in the sportsmen division.
The supercups were on hand as well Saturday night, running in two different groups. An adult and youth group run in two separate races. The youth group saw Kyle Brinkman and Jake Zellmer both nab wins in their heats. The adult division had David Pennel and Jeff Myers get wins in their respective races.
The thundercars ran two eight-lap heat events. Phil Wade and Vic Humes of Knox both picked up wins.
After a short intermission it was time for the feature racing action.
The late models started out the feature racing with a 40- lap event. The race started out with Adam Terry dominating early. Terry would not be able to hold off Boal for the win. Terry succumbed to the competition behind. Sanders held on for the strong second-place finish with Steve Stacey coming home in third.
The supercups ran two features with both running 20 laps. The first feature was for the youth division. Jake Zellmer held off Jacob Van Mazer and Kyle Brinkman at the line in a three-wide photo finish at the line. Zellmer, Van Mazer and Brinkman finished one, two, three respectively.
The adult group watched Jeff Myers pull out to an early lead, and he never looked back as he drove on for the win. Myers was followed by Erik Gerhke in second and Mick Ellis in third.
The sportsmen ran two features, an A and a B race.
The first feature was 30 laps long. Mike Schewchuk added to his points lead by picking up the feature win. He was followed in second by Kevin Gunkel, and Gary Chapman crossed the line in third.
The sportsmen B feature was won by Lisa McFadden. It was her first-ever feature win. She was followed in second by Greg Gifford, and Roger Rubino came home in the third position.
The last event of the night was the thundercar feature consisting of 20 laps. Kevin Woodcox got his first feature win of the year in the event. He was followed in second by Shawn White,while Troy Lindsey crossed the line in third.
This weekend at the Plymouth Speedway the late models, sportsmen, mini stocks, thundercars and front wheel drives will all be on hand along with the dwarf cars for the East-West Shootout.
