First H1N1 clinic moves smoothly

PLYMOUTH — For most it is a strange sight to see. Literally hundreds of children, lined up down the block from an elementary school hoping to get a shot.
That was the unlikely scene at Washington School in Plymouth last night as The Marshall County Health Department held its first H1N1 flu shot clinic. In spite of the large numbers that turned out and the trickle of vaccine into the county, the department didn’t have to turn anyone away. Everyone who came received an inoculation.

PLYMOUTH — “Meet the Teacher” nights at Plymouth Schools have proven to be a great way to start the school year. Classes got underway today at the public schools.
The various schools invite students to bring in their supplies, making it easier to get to classes on the first day. Since the events are held in the evenings, more parents are able to attend.
Menominee and Jefferson Elementary Schools were open Monday night; Washington Tuesday.
At Menominee Elementary, Principal Mike Dunn greeted new and returning students and made himself available for questions from parents.

“From all the smiles and hugs, it’s obvious that the kids can’t wait to come back to school.” Dunn said. “Parents get an opportunity to see where their children are going to sit, play and learn. “
Jefferson Elementary Principal Robert Remenih reported similar experiences. Remenih said, “It’s been wonderful and it helps the first day of school go a lot smoother.” “We had just about every parent here.”
Even after many years of teaching and administration, Remenih still gets excited about the upcoming school year. He said, “It’s wonderful to be going into another year.”
Both principals praised their staffs for preparing for the events. Remenih said, “The teachers, secretaries and custodians have been working tirelessly to make sure everything is ready.”
Each teacher held welcoming activities in their rooms. Among those acquainting their own children with  kindergarten teachers was Lincoln Junior High Assistant Principal Reid Gault and former Plymouth High School Principal Dick Tobias. Gault and his wife Phyllis appeared a little apprehensive, but daughter Tallulah had no trouble getting to know the other kids. Within minutes, Tallulah introduced herself to tablemate Rianna Swartzendruber and then proceeded to show her how her tooth fell out.
Phyllis Gault excitedly took a picture of the two saying, “I have to get a picture of Tallulah and her first school friend. This is great. I cried a little at the kindergarten round-up, but now I’m excited for Tallulah.”
Both Rianna and Tallulah will be in the class taught by Katie Swaitkowski.
Tobias was thrilled to be able to introduce granddaughter Emma Cook to her teacher. Tobias said, “I haven’t been able to do very much of this for the last 18 years.”
Emma’s mother, Jennifer Vanhouten, was present to keep both Emma and Tobias grounded.
