By Rusty Nixon Correspondent ARGOS — The Argos Dragons will welcome a new face to the sidelines, but he’s hardly a new face to Marshall County basketball. Former Plymouth Pilgrims player and assistant coach and Joel Grindle will move into his first head coaching position with Argos High School, where he will also teach business. Grindle moves into the position left vacant by Jon Everingham, who left Argos to become the head coach at DeKalb High School.
“I was looking for an opportunity to be a head coach and this was just a really great fit,” said Grindle. “I’m really looking forward to this.” A strong nucleus of returning talent for a Dragon team that has showed well the past two years may be a big reason for Grindle’s optimism. “I think we have some talent returning and a good chance to be pretty successful,” said Grindle. “I know they’ve been a very solid fundamental team and that’s exactly what we want to continue. I’m looking forward continuing to build on the tradition they’ve established at Argos over the years.” The new Dragon boss had a chance to learn under one of the games best in retired Plymouth coach Jack Edison. He feels that experience is one that has prepared him well to be a head coach. “I’ve had the greatest opportunity to learn under the best coach in Indiana in Jack Edison,” said Grindle. “Last year John Scott gave me an enhanced role which was a great opportunity, but the three years I had to coach under coach Edison, I couldn’t have had a better experience.” While the opportunity is an exciting one, Grindle knows there are real challenges ahead. “In a perfect world this would have shaken out a little earlier so we could have had the summer to start installing the offense and defensive things we want to incorporate,” said Grindle. “Everybody is going to be a little ahead of us in the early going. We’ll only have about three weeks and then we’re going to have to start looking at the Bremen Lions and what we have to do to beat them. “We just want to improve every game, and I think we have the ability to compete. We’ll get better as the year goes on as the players and I learn more about each other. Hopefully we’ll have a chance to compete for the sectional title. That’s a place we’d obviously like to be.”
