By John K. Reed Correspondent MARSHALL COUNTY — Storms battered Plymouth and surrounding areas not once, not twice, but three times Monday afternoon and late into the night. The strongest storm of the three started around 10:30 p.m., and brought heavy sky-to-ground lightning, thunder, and rain causing nearly zero visibility at times.
Wind gusts reported in excess of 50 mph brought down several trees. One came down across the hood of a car near the intersection of Miner and Williams streets in Plymouth. The car was unoccupied at the time. A roof fire, possibly caused by lightning, was reported near 5B and Linden roads. A tree had also fallen across power lines in the same area, blocking 5B Road. The Marshall County Sheriff’s Office also responded to a very large tree down, with downed power lines, near Rose and 6th roads. Damage to power lines from the tree brought down the electrical substation in the area, causing traffic signal outages at Queen and U.S. 30, along with residential power outages. Marshall County was more fortunate than some surrounding areas. More than 100 mph wind gusts were reported in Michigan City, and one fatality was caused due to a tree breaking and falling on a car, reported in LaPorte County. Other surrounding counties were hit, including Fulton, Kosciusko and St. Joseph, but no major injuries or damage had been reported in those areas by press time.
