McBride requests land, questions reporter E-mail
Friday, 25 July 2008
By Angel Perkins Editor
Triton softball coach and gym teacher and Bourbon Little League Park Manager Steve McBride attended Monday's school board meeting and requested the use of the school's land to construct a new concession stand to replace the others at the local ball park. "The softball program has increased quite a bit and we've outgrown our concession stand," he explained.
McBride gave the board an estimated "footprint" of space to be used as "40 by 40" (feet), saying the new building would stand north of the new parking lot and east of the batting cage, to better centrally tend to the fans.
"I don't think anyone would argue (that) what we've put there (on school property) has been an improvement," he said, adding, "If you don't approve it, we'll make do."
He explained while the building would be on school land, the concessions profits go back into the little league program by going back to the town.
Times-Union reporter Julie Harvey asked who held liability insurance on the property, if it would be covered by the little league's (the town's) policy or if it would be covered by the school's policy (since the building is on school property). McBride responded, "Who's asking about insurance; What business is it of yours to ask?"
New Triton Schools Superintendent Carl Hilling said the question was a good one, and one he had intended to ask but said that Harvey "beat him to it." McBride said the policy from the town would cover the new building and that it covers the batting cages and the concessions though it lists them as a restaurant. "The players' entry fee helps pay for our liability (insurance)," he added.
Hilling asked McBride if he had spoken to Triton Athletic Director Mason McIntyre to see whether the new construction would pose any problem to any of the other teams and McIntyre replied that it wouldn't. "The cross country team runs around that area but I don't see it as a problem," he said.
The board gave their approval for the new building with the stipulation that the summer little league supply the insurance policy and McBride was requested to provide a copy thereof.
