By Andrew D. Hayn Correspondent PLYMOUTH — This past Saturday night at the Plymouth Speedway the fans, drivers, and officials alike got a taste of Mother Nature yet again. The rains blew in from the west all morning long and lingered late into the afternoon. The rains forced the officials to cancel all qualifying and heat races for the day’s events. This left only feature racing action for the six classes in competition.
The first class out for the features was the junior division for the traveling supercup stars. This group includes racers up to 14 years of age. The 20-lap event went smoothly except for a mid-race caution that involved Dakota Morris taking a wild ride up the banking in between turns one and two on his top. He walked away without any injuries. After a quick cleanup effort the action went back to green. Garrett Goodwin had everything going his way as he drove on for victory. He was followed in second by Jake Selmer and Kyle Brinkman crossed the line in the third spot. The adult supercup division followed the juniors with their 20-lap affair. This race was fast paced with Eric Gerhke leading the way for the majority of the event. Jeff Myers, however, was the fastest competitor on the track as he chased down Gerhke for the lead. He had Jim Termanes in tow and he was able to follow Myers into second. When the checkered flag fell that’s the way they finished up — Myers, Termanes in second and Gerhke rounding out the podium in third. The late models were up next for their 30-lap feature. This event saw Scott Ross of Plymouth pull out to an early lead, only to have mechanical problems early. A slowing Ross caused the field to slow down behind him except for Ronnie Maynard Jr. Maynard went up high with the pedal stuck to the floor and took over the top spot. Michael Thayer tried to chase down Maynard late in the race but it was too little too late. Thayer finished in second with Steve Stacey in third. The sportsmen went 25 laps with action filled throughout. After several incidents occurring throughout the race in the top five positions, Kevin Gunkel found himself in the lead with just 5 laps remaining. Gunkel held off a late attempt by Billy Rumbaugh in turn four for the victory. Rumbaugh came home in second and Nick Presslor held on for the third spot. The mini stocks had a 25-lap feature event that was filled with cautions early. After everyone settled down it was all Rich Hensley in a borrowed car from Jim Newman after Hensley’s original ride had mechanical problems earlier in the day during practice. Hensley added to his points lead with the win. Dave Biesmyer of North Webster finished in second and Derrick Davis continued his consistent ways with a third-place finish. The last event of the night was the thundercar 20-lap feature. The race was fast paced with few cautions. When the checkered flag fell Cory Linsdey was the first competitor to cross the line for his first win of the season. He was followed in second by Brandon Tresh and Keith Woodcox finished in the third spot. This Saturday night at the Plymouth Speedway the Front Wheel Drives return along with the Late Models, Sportsman, and Mini Stocks. |
