The search is on for Argos principal E-mail
Tuesday, 22 July 2008
By Angel Perkins Staff Writer
ARGOS — The search is officially on as Argos Jr. Sr. High School Principal Quinn Selner’s resignation was approved Monday night. Selner, who had only been with the corporation for a little over a year, declined to comment, but some concerned, former co-workers spoke up on their disappointment.
A special education instructor at the high school, who asked not to be named, noted how helpful it was working with Selner as her superior because she was experienced in special education as well, and could assist when needed in that capacity. “When someone has that much potential, if they would be given direction, they could accomplish so much more,” she said.

Eugene Snyder voiced his agreement. “I think we’re losing a good young lady here,” he said. “She made some mistakes at first but she improved.” Snyder said he was concerned with the school system losing her and added, “I think we’re really making a mistake here. I’m disappointed and I wish we’d try to do something about it before it’s too late.”
Social studies teacher Brady Johnson informed the board that in his four years of working for the Argos students, this was the fourth principal he had worked with. “I haven’t had consistent leadership and it’s hard for a teacher to have to learn how each principal is going to be to work with,” he explained. “It’s a concern, this constant turnover.”
Whatever the reason for Selner’s resignation, it may have been instigated through a succession of a special and then executive meeting which are closed to the public. At one held on June 24, Argos School Board members, a patron and the superintendent met to discuss whether or not to renew Selner’s contract.
During a second meeting July 9, that Selner was in attendance for, a job performance evaluation was discussed.
She turned in her letter of resignation July 16.
“Because it is an employee issue we can’t discuss it,” explained school superintendent Barb Flory. Said board vice president Jim Burkett: “We wish her well.” Other board members voiced their agreement.
Flory said that the corporation would be accepting applications through next week and that she hopes someone will be accepted by Aug. 7. At present, five people have applied for the position.
Other resignations ap-proved included Jackie Alcorn from part-time elementary instructional assistant; Jon Everingham from business teacher and part-time basketball coach; Carly Everingham from seventh and eighth grade girls volleyball coach, varsity volleyball assistant and girls softball coach, and John Watchmann from C-Team boys basketball coach.
Gloria Ely was approved for hire to replace Darlene Cowger, head custodian, due to her approved retirement and part-time study hall supervisor Glenda Mechling-Smith will take over Amy Norris’ job share when she takes off work for maternity leave. Currently the Argos School Corporation is also seeking a non-certified technology assistant and a junior, senior high school business teacher to hire.
