By Rusty Nixon Correspondent PLYMOUTH — A lifelong dream will come true for local Democrat Michelle Livinghouse, who will serve as a delegate from the state of Indiana to the Democratic National Convention. “The convention has always been a family event for me,” she said. “I remember watching for the first time on TV in 1964 and thinking then that someday I’m going to go to one.”
Livinghouse was elected to the post by the Indiana State Democratic convention and will make the trip to Denver in August with the rest of the Hoosier delegation. Each delegate was elected by a district caucus, and this year Livinghouse decided to run for the opportunity. “It was a little more complicated this year; we had to be committed either to Senator Clinton or Senator Obama,” said Livinghouse. “I did support Hillary Clinton and I still feel very strongly about that support, but I’m also very please to support Senator Obama.” It’s the historic nature of both candidates that made Livinghouse decide to seek election as a delegate. “This is going to be a historic year at the convention and I thought about that and decided that this was the year I wanted to try and be there,” she said. “I wanted to be part of that history.” Also being a part of the convention itself was an attraction. “I wanted to be part of the camaraderie of a convention and share in that atmosphere,” she said. “I’ve been to almost every state convention since 1968 and always wanted to go to a national convention. It’s going to be good to be in the company of a group of Democrats with shared ideas and shared goals.” Running for the position wasn’t very difficult. “I love to campaign,” she said. “It really wasn’t very difficult. You really know the group you need to talk to and I just tried to talk to as many delegates as possible.” Of course, if Barack Obama should win the presidency for the party, it would be even that much more of an historic event. “We certainly aren’t taking anything for granted. It’s going to be a tough race,” she said. “I was particularly encouraged by the strong showing of both of our candidates in Indiana and especially in Marshall County (during the May Primary Election.)
