CULVER — The world’s best in wakeboarding will come to Lake Maxinkuckee this weekend to show their skills in a free event, sponsored by Culver Marina.

“We’ve got the six top pros, and some of the best amateurs in Indiana coming to compete,” said event organizer Gary Aker Jr. of the Culver Marina. “Later in the day there will be a ‘Rail Jam’ and after that a barbecue and just a big party for everybody.”

Among the pros scheduled to compete are Shane and Parks Bonifay, Rusty Malinoski, Andrew Adkison, Trevor Hansen and Zane Schwenk. Parks Bonifay is a two-time X Games champion in the sport.

“These are the six top wakeboarders in the country,” said Aker. “It’s really something that we can get them all here at the same time and we have some of the best outlaw riders in Indiana, guys that are just about to turn pro.”

Riders will all be competing for cash prizes in the event. Later in the day the “Rail Jam” will provide excitement all its own as the pros show their skills.

“They set up a pair of pools about 180 feet long,” explained Aker. “There’s a winch that pulls them in the pool so they can do jumps and tricks on the rail and land in the other pool.”

Parking and admission at Culver Beach will be free for the day and there is no admission charge for the event  —all sponsored by Culver Marina.

“Of course it helps promote the Marina, but it also brings some excitement for an international event right here at Lake Maxinkuckee,” said Aker. “These are the biggest superstars in wakeboarding and having a chance to see them ride in Culver is a big event.”

Aker and the Marina hope to make the event an annual one.

“We really hope we can make this a yearly thing,” said Aker. “Let’s see how the first one goes I guess, hopefully we’ve got some interest in wakeboarding here in the area.”
