First H1N1 clinic moves smoothly

PLYMOUTH — For most it is a strange sight to see. Literally hundreds of children, lined up down the block from an elementary school hoping to get a shot.
That was the unlikely scene at Washington School in Plymouth last night as The Marshall County Health Department held its first H1N1 flu shot clinic. In spite of the large numbers that turned out and the trickle of vaccine into the county, the department didn’t have to turn anyone away. Everyone who came received an inoculation.

PLYMOUTH — For the second time in two years, a Triton Jr-Sr High School graduate  — Brooke Lindi Blackford — was named Miss Blueberry. She was crowned Saturday night at Plymouth High School by outgoing queen Bethany Clemens.

Blackford’s reign will be for a period of one year and includes representing the Marshall County Blueberry Festival held in Plymouth over the Labor Day weekend.

After winning, Blackford said, “It was total surprise. This is the first time I’ve competed.”

In the fall, she will be attending Indiana University of South Bend, majoring in Dental Hygiene. She received a $1,500 scholarship for being named Miss Blueberry. She is the daughter of Ken and Tina Blackford.

Seventeen contestants entered this year’s pageant. Each one was judged on a seven-minute interview that was held earlier in the day, theme wear presentation, and formal wear. Every contestant also had to answer a question on stage in front of the large crowd.

Receiving a $1,000 scholarship and placing first runner-up was Emily Ann Monroe. She will be entering her junior year at Purdue University in the fall. She is majoring in Visual Communication Design and minoring in Communication and Anthropology. The 20-year-old is the daughter of Jimmy and Carolyn Monroe.

Katie Day was named second runner-up. The 2008 Plymouth High School graduate is the daughter of Ron and Lori Day. This fall, she will be entering Butler University where she plans to major in Journalism and Political Science. Day, 18, received a $750 scholarship.

The third runner-up spot was captured by Jessica Theresa Hoeffler. Hoeffler graduated from Plymouth High School in 2008. The 18-year-old is heading to Indiana University this fall where she will be majoring in pre-med and minoring in dance. She is the daughter of Doug and Marie Hoeffler. She received a $500 scholarship to be used towards her future education.

Janelle Leigh Morris was given a $250 scholarship for placing fourth runner-up. The 16-year-old will be a junior at Bremen High School in the fall. She is the daughter of Branden and Cindy Morris.
The Miss Friendship winner was 20-year-old Stephanie Lynn Yates. The award, voted on by the contestants themselves, is given to the contestant that has displayed the qualities of friendship during the practices and the entire contest.

She is the daughter of Michael and Jacqueline Yates. Yates also received an enthusiastic round of applause when it was announced that she is currently enlisted in the United States Army.
Retiring Miss Blueberry Bethany Clemens thanked a number of people who had helped her during her year as the Blueberry Festival representative.

Local pageant organizers have made a decision not to advance the winner of the Miss Blueberry contest to the Indiana State Festivals Queen Pageant in November.
