According to Mike Good, director of the Marshall County Solid Waste Management District, the program was one of the first programs of its kind in Indiana.
On Tuesday, Suesse was presented a Lifetime Achievement Award for the Advancement of Recycling by Good and was honored by a proclamation by Plymouth Mayor Mark Senter. “The program was very well designed and included regular neighborhood meetings complete with recycling incentives and a network of block captains,” Good said. Suesse served on the Solid Waste District’s Advisory Committee and helped to create the school and business cardboard recycling programs, Good said. As astonishing as it seems, Suesse’s efforts for the city of Plymouth has made it possible to recover more than 10 million pounds of materials for recycling. In a letter addressed to Suesse, Good said, “The recycling programs you’ve established have not only conserved resources, landfill space and reduced greenhouse gas emissions, but have also created jobs and a more sustainable environment.” Helping to initiate the recognition of Suesse’s efforts was local attorney and former council member Kenneth Lukenbill. Lukenbill said, “He (Suesse) deserves a lot of credit. It took some persuasion to get the council members to take on the program.” Also attending the presentation were former councilman Bob Manuwal and current Plymouth Clerk-Treasurer Toni Hutchings. Both had served with Suesse.
