By Rusty Nixon Correspondent PLYMOUTH — Progress on the South Michigan Street bridge project continues at a good clip but not quite good enough to keep it from taking a little longer than scheduled. The bridge was originally scheduled to be completed by July 1 but bad weather in the early stages of the construction will keep it from being complete until Aug. 1. Workers were seeking a four-day extension from the Indiana Department of Transportation for delays encountered recently in the installing of a new water main through the structure by the city of Plymouth.
It was believed the main ran through the original bridge structure and could be replaced quickly. When work began it was discovered that the main actually ran under the Yellow River. It was believed the extension would be granted since the delays were caused by unforeseen circumstances beyond the crew’s control. The County Commissioners voted their support for granting the delay. It was still hoped that a 14-day extension would be granted to DLZ, the company doing the construction, by INDOT for the earlier weather problems. If not, the company stands to lose approximately $1,500 a day in penalties. The Commissioners accepted replies on their request for qualifications for the razing of the old jail building. Companies providing the RFQ’s for consideration were Brandenburg Industrial Services, RQAW, and DLZ. Action was tabled for review by the committee studying the demolition. A recommendation will be made on a company for the project at a later date. Youth Court will be held in the Commissioners meeting room on a 90-day trial basis. Questions of cleanliness of the facility, just who would be in the County Building on trial days and a retainer fee were addressed by representatives of the Bowen Center, who runs the program for youthful offenders for the Marshall County Probation Department. The Commissioners voted to allow the proceedings in the building for a limited time. Informal discussions were held by the commissioners with representatives from The Indiana Department of Environmen-tal Management, the Department of Natural Resources and INDOT on a number of topics. The discussions are held as a way of keeping communication lines open between county and state governmental agencies. The Marshall County street department will chip and seal portions of Albert, Courtland and Kimble roads, along with Thumper Trail in LaPaz in preparation for the city’s annexation of that area.
