By James Costello Sports Writer MARION — After a near loss in Monday's Indiana Boys Junior-Senior All-Star Scrimmage at Washington in which the seniors barely pulled out a 93-91 win over the juniors, senior all-stars head coach Rick Baumgartner of Muncie South was looking for a better outing from his team in the final scrimmage Wednesday at Marion High School. The seniors delivered, working the ball inside to connect at a better than 52 percent rate from the field, while shutting the juniors out of the inside for a dominant 114-83 victory.
"Much better chemistry offensively. No comparison," said Baumgartner. "We got the ball inside, outside, looked for each other, the break was tremendous. That obviously is a strength. And I saw much more intensity out of everybody on the defensive end, which we did not see the other night and that's why some people didn't play a lot of minutes." Although his playing time was limited to 12 minutes at Wednesday's game, recent Plymouth graduate and Ball State recruit Randy Davis showed his usual versatility with a 4-for-6 performance from the field for 8 points and three assists in addition to two deflections and a steal on defense. Most of Davis' points production came late in the second half as he hit 3 of 4 shots, including two breakaway layups. "They were down so they had to force some shots," said Davis of the Junior All-Stars. "When they missed it we got the rebound and just looked for the break. Streaking out is pretty easy when there's nobody on you, but I thought overall I played pretty decent. I had a couple deflections, maybe a steal or two, and then that assist during the first half I think was really key when we pulled away." "I thought he played well tonight," Baumgartner said of Davis. "I thought he scrapped hard... He played much better tonight. He ran the floor, got out on the break. He put his hands on things defensively. That didn't happen the other night with him or some other players. His intensity stepped up tremendously on the defensive end of the floor." The former Pilgrim standout and Mr. Basketball runner-up said the extra day of practice made all the difference in Wednesday's win, and the stats unquestionably bear him out as the seniors recorded 31 total assists at Marion. "We played a lot better in some areas," Davis said. "Last game we came out, and we've never all played together before; we just kind of played together at some practices. This time I think we just kind of jelled a little bit better, we knew where we were going to be, and we just hit shots with that." Mr. Basketball Tyler Zeller — a 7-foot North Carolina recruit — led the seniors down low in both scoring and rebounding with a game-high 28 points and nine caroms. The juniors were led by Scott Wood, who hit six treys en route to 20 points. • BOYS SENIOR ALL-STARS 114, BOYS JUNIOR ALL-STARS 83 At Marion SENIORS (114): Randy Davis 4 0-0 8, Tyler Zeller 13 2-3 28, Larry Stone 1 0-0 2, Alex Young 5 0-2 10, Gordon Hayward 3 4-4 10, Chase Stigall 1 0-0 3, Julian Mavunga 5 1-1 11, Daniel Moore 2 0-0 4, Braydon Hobbs 3 0-0 9, Kyle Kuric 2 0-0 4, Julius Mays 4 0-0 9, Garrett Butcher 5 1-2 11.
