ETNA GREEN — Vance Stills couldn’t be at his own business, the Etna Green Cafe, Wednesday to meet with Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels when the top state official breezed through after a visit to Elkhart.

Soccer tournament to kick off Latino Fest E-mail

PLYMOUTH — Heart and Hands will present the seventh annual Latino Festival, scheduled for Saturday, June 21, at Centennial Park in Plymouth.  Admission is free.  
This year’s opening ceremonies will begin with Mayor Senter kicking the first ball at the Heart and Hands’ annual soccer tournament to begin at 10 a.m. on the Plymouth High School practice field.  
On stage at the amphitheater, the beautiful baby contest will also begin at 10 a.m. while the festival actually opens at noon.
“Ballet Folklorico de Elkhart” will begin the day’s entertainment from noon until 1 p.m. followed by the Mariachi Zelaya of Indianapolis at 1 to 1:45 p.m.
“My Brother’s Salsa Band” will provide the local entertainment from 2:30 to 4 p.m. and audience participation events such as jalapeño and watermelon eating contests, and a limbo contest, will run from 4:30 to 5 p.m.
The evening entertainment will bring back the popular band, “Los Bandits” from 6 to 7:30 p.m. This group has been a favorite from a few years ago, featuring Tex-Mex music, the infectious accordion-led dance music features a mixing of rhythm and blues, gospel and country rock influences with Norteno and Tejano performance style and instrumentation.
The evening finale from 8 to 9:30 p.m. will present “The Hector Silveira Orchestra,” a talented singer, director, composer and arranger from Camaguey, Cuba.
The Chicago Reader Review says, “Hector Silveira has played to enthusiastic crowds the world over, blending Cuban dance music and folkloric rhythms into his own unique sound.  ‘The Orquestra’ will leave you breathless.”
The kid’s barrio is a big attraction each year and this year will be filled with exciting things for the children from noon to 6 p.m. with pony rides, a magician, balloon sculptures, face painting, piñatas, toddler rides and much more. This will make the family-fun event a highlight for the kids.
One of the events being planned for the festival is a silent auction, which will serve as a fundraiser for the organization.
More than 100 volunteers give their time each year to make this day a success.
The Heart and Hands Latino Festival is the main fundraising event for the operation of the organization year round.
Another event during the festival that helps raise funds is the Latino Leadership Raffle. To help support these events, stop by the Heart and Hands booth.
New items and gift certificates are now being accepted as donations for the auction.  Items can be dropped off at Heart and Hands, 308 E. Jefferson St. Plymouth or the Plymouth Parks Department.
