By Carol Anders Staff Writer PLYMOUTH — The majority of the May Aviation Board meeting was devoted to a presentation on possible alternative plans for a proposed Plymouth Airport expansion. Chris Snyder, Woolpert, Inc., has been working on the project for several months. At this point, his firm has identified areas of wetlands, among other things, that will need to be considered before any final plans are ready for FFA approval. However, it appears that Woolpert will have to return to Plymouth in the near future to show the plans to the new members of the Aviation Board.
In a press release issued late last week, Plymouth Mayor Mark Senter announced changes in the Plymouth Board of Aviation Commissioners. According to Senter, on Wednesday local attorney and airport board member Ralph “Rick” Huff sent a letter of resignation to Mayor Senter. Huff has been on the aviation board for 20 years and has worked for six different mayors. He was first appointed by Mayor Bill Satorius in January 1987. Huff stated he wanted to spend more time with his law practice, his campaign for judicial office and his family. Mayor Senter also asked for the resignations of Dr. Byron Holm and Susan Huff as well. Dr. Holm has been on the board since February 2001 and Mrs. Huff since May of 2004. In his statement, Senter said, “These three dedicated board members will be replaced by Phil Bockman, Steve Hupka and Tom Flynn. Present board member Bill Satorius will remain on the board.” Following is information on the new board members as compiled by Senter’s office. Phil Bockman, 30, and his wife Becky (Reed) have been married for 10 years. They have 4 children; ages 9, 7, 5 a nd 3. He was born and raised in Plymouth and is the owner of Precision Machine and Tool on North Oak Road in Plymouth. The family lives near 7B and Lilac Roads. In his free time, Phil is the head coach of the freshman football team at Plymouth High School and an assistant varsity coach. He also enjoys “hit-and-miss engines” and spending time with his family. Steve Hupka, 49, currently is employed by Standard Motor Products in Mishawaka as a quality control manager. Steve owns his own aircraft (Cherokee 180) and keeps it in a hangar at Plymouth airport. He earned his pilot’s license in 1996 and is currently just a few hours away from his instrument rating. Steve grew up south of Ft. Wayne and has lived in this area for 15 years. He is active in the Masons Lodge #742 in Osceola and enjoys fishing and flying. Steve and wife Shirley live in the Forrest Hills subdivision. Tom Flynn, 47, and his wife Kelsey have been married for 24 years. They have three children; Katie, Tom and Daniel. He was born in Kalamazoo, but raised in Plymouth.
