“You just don’t want to shoot yourself out of the tournament,” said Cyr. “You can lose the tournament on the first day but you can’t win it. Go out there and take it one shot at a time keep it close.”
Teammate Trent Castro concurred with Cyr’s approach.
“It doesn’t matter if you hit them all, you’re not going to win on the first day,” he said. “You still have three days left. Try to hit fairways and have fun out there.”
He too was hoping to get off to a good start on opening day, trying to beat the weather.
“Par I think would be a good round today,” he said. “The rest of the week is going to be kind of tough.”
Castro is playing his first rounds of golf at Indiana National Golf Club, having had a practice round on Monday.
“I like it, it’s a good course,” he said. “There are some holes you should hit draws on, some holes you should hit cuts on, some tough holes and easy ones so it’s a nice variety.”
Cyr, who played four rounds on the course a year ago, returns to Plymouth and is feeling good about what he see’s.
“We got to see the course yesterday. It’s a little wet but the greens are rolling good,” he said. “It’s going to be tough and that’s good I think it will separate the teams that are at the top of their game right now. There’s going to be some bad weather this week too, so that ought to be fun.”
Two teams from Oklahoma, Oklahoma Christian and Oklahoma City are again the teams to beat in this year’s competition in the eyes of most golfers. Oklahoma City was champion a year ago. Oklahoma Christian sports one of the NAIA’s top golfers in Bruno Buccolo.
“Oklahoma City is definitely the favorite, they’ve won it the past couple of years,” said Cyr, but doesn’t count out his team’s chances. “We have to play really well. Every team is going to have to play pretty well. We’ll have to play our best golf of the year there’s no doubt about that.”
