PLYMOUTH — This past Saturday afternoon was a great weekend for the Plymouth Speedway to kick off the 2008 racing season with an open practice followed by a front wheel drive enduro. The Advance Properties 300 was raced at 5 p.m.
The race got off to a quick start with the first 100 laps taking only a half hour to complete. By the end of the first 100 laps the race was between four cars — Greenwood’s Casey Davis, Battle Creek’s Dave Miller, Valparaiso’s Kelton Kaechel and Tippecanoe’s Robert Reed.
A mid-race red brought troubles to the first of the top contenders. Kaechel, who had been battling for the lead for a majority of the race and also led a great number of laps, had issues with overheating. He failed to get going after the restart and was forced to the infield and out of the race.
The other three drivers continued to duke it out until about 30 laps to go when on the restart Miller had starter issues. He had a lap edge over Davis but this unfortunate turn of events also put him a lap down to Reed and on the same lap as Davis. At this point Reed just had to stay clear of troubles and finish the race for the win.
The troubles were not over for Miller. Late in the race with roughly 15 laps to go attrition took its toll on his Ford Escort and forced him to the infield. Davis rolled on by him in the closing laps to take the second spot away.
When the checkered flag fell Reed was the first to cross the stripe. Davis, and Craig Miller finished in second and third respectively.
This weekend the Plymouth Speedway will kick off its regular season for the points battle with the Late Models, Sportsman, Mini Stocks, Thundercars, and the Front Wheel Drives. The racing will start at 7:30 p.m. For more information visit
