Pilot Photo/Carol Anders By Carol Anders Staff Writer ARGOS — All of the students (K-6) and staff at Argos Elementary School met on the lawn behind the school on Friday to simultaneously do the “chicken dance.” Leading the dance was Principal Ron Liechty who was dressed in crepe paper feathers for the occasion. Helping him to pump up the crowd was school counselor Rich Stauffer. Stauffer wore duck slippers, a costume and yellow rubber gloves to get the children in the sprit.
According to school Media Specialist Mary Jackson, they hope to eventually get into the Guinness Book as the largest group of people to do the chicken dance. Whether that happens or not, the students have already met and exceeded goals for the annual “reading rally”. The 375 students read more than 315,000 pages during the month of April. Kindergarten teacher Portia Wampler said her students either read or listened as pages were read to them. Wampler said their total was 12,000 pages. This year’s theme grew out of a project during February of duckling eggs hatching. Jackson said, “The chicken dance was closely tied to the ‘Reading Is Just Ducky’ theme.” Prior to the group dance, students vied for prizes in the egg rolling and spoon/egg relay races. Stauffer said they have a different theme each year to keep the kids interested and reading. He said, “One year we even milked a cow.”
