By Carol Anders Staff Writer
BREMEN — The Grants Committee of the Marshall County Community Foundation awarded the first round of grants for the year 2008.
More than $353,000 was awarded to 14 organizations and/or projects around Marshall County. In addition, $14,742.35 was awarded to three organizations from the Ralph C. Vonnegut Fund.
Three Bremen organizations received grants during this round.
•The Bremen Academy (alternative education program) received a $2,030 grant to be used for the development of a language arts library.
•Community Hospital of Bremen plans to use the award of $12,981.13 for signage and Internet services throughout its building used for social service and support organizations.
Director of Nursing Andrea Koontz said the hospital hopes to publicize the programs offered so more people can take advantage of them.
    • RT Henke said Historic Bremen plans to use the award of $4,000 to fund a biography of Dr. Otis Bowen.
He said the material will be written at a fourth grade level so that it can be used as a textbook, reference book and story book. Hinkey said actual photographs of Dr. Bowen will be used in the publication.
The general endowment of the Marshall County Community Foundation now exceeds $4 million. This enables the Foundation to award grants in excess of $240,000 on an annual basis. The Foundation offers two grant periods. Grant applications are due Feb. 1 and Aug. 1 each year. Applications may be obtained by calling the Marshall County Community Foundation at 574-935-5159 or visiting its Web site at www.marshallcountycf.org .
