    CULVER — Mr. John P. Plante Jr, 76, of Culver, passed away Sunday, May 4, 2008 at 10:24 p.m. at Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center, Plymouth.
    John was born Aug. 10, 1931 in Ora, one of six children to John and Ethel (Greer) Plante. He attended Ora School and Knox High School.
    John served in the US Marine Corps from 1950-1954. He participated in operations against enemy forces in South and Central Korea, in which he received several medals for combat. He entered the Navy Reserves in 1962, and served 27 years until his retirement in 1989.  John was very proud of his military service, and looked forward every year to attending his Marine Corps Brotherhood and Survivors reunion of the How Co., 3rd Battalion, 7th Regiment, First Marine Division, FMF Korea 1950-1953.
    John worked for 42 years at Culver Academies as the Building Maintenance Supervisor, and was a bus driver for athletic events and other school functions. He was a lifetime member of the Finney-Shilling VFW Post 6919 of Culver and the Collins-Tasch American Legion Post 399 of Monterey, and was also a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows Maxinkuckee Lodge 373.
    On May 9, 1953 he married Joyce E. Mikesell at the Mt. Hope Church, Culver. Their daughter Gloria Diana was born on June 13, 1954. Their son, Wayne Michael was born on Jan. 26, 1957.
    John is survived by his wife, Joyce of Culver; son, Wayne of Deland, Fla.; son-in-law Gary Hinton of Culver; grandson, Peter (Kellie) Manzuk of Plymouth; granddaughter, Andrea Manzuk of Phoenix, Ariz.; and grandson, David Plante of Elkhart. John had six great-grandchildren: Matthew Manzuk of Plymouth, and Colin, Tyler, Regan, Blake, and Kendall Plante of Elkhart. John is also survived by his sisters: Camilla (John) Brettin of Knox, Donna Hunnicutt of Ora, and Betty (Richard) Brettin of Knox.
    John was preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Vern and Richard; and daughter, Gloria.
    Services have been entrusted to the Bonine-Odom Funeral Home, Culver, where friends may join the family in celebration John’s life on Monday, May 12, 2008 from 2 to 8 p.m. EDT.  Rev. Curtis Heydt will officiate funeral services of Tuesday, May 13, 2008 at 10 a.m. EDT at the Culver Academies Memorial Chapel.

Charles Eugene Hanes
April 18, 1922 - May 5, 2008
    Former resident of Bourbon and current resident of Edmond, Okla. died Monday, May 5, 2008 at Mercy Hospital in Oklahoma City, Okla.
    Charles Eugene Hanes was born April 18, 1922 in the family home in Elkhart, the oldest son of Retha Waggoner Hanes and Arthur G. Hanes.
    Mr. Hanes attended Elkhart School before moving to Marshall County and graduated from Bourbon High School in the Class of 1940.
    A devout Methodist, he was very active in his church and served in many offices. He was a member of the Bremen Masonic Lodge #414 and the Scottish Rite Valley of South Bend. As an Aerospace Engineer with Bendix Missile Corporation, he was involved with the research and design of many missile systems throughout the years. He was also a member of the Bendix Management Club where he served as treasurer.
    Mr. Hanes was a World War II veteran. He enlisted under the Navy V-5 Cadet Program in July, 1942. He completed his training in August, 1943 at Pensacola Naval Air Station where he received his Wings and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps. He was a dive bomber pilot and was carrier based in the Pacific Theater for 23 months. He flew from the CV4 U.S.S. Ranger, The CVE 101 U.S.S. Matanikau and the CVE 113 U.S.S. Puget Sound. He attained the rank of Captain.
    On May 24, 1944, he was married to E. Kathleen Kirby Hanes in Laguna Beach, Calif. After World War II, they returned to the Bourbon area where they purchased a farm and raised a family of three children. Their children are Larry (Lynn) Hanes of South Carolina, Dr. Michael (Madlyn) Hanes of Pennsylvania, and Patricia Hanes (Dr. Louis) Furmanski of Oklahoma. They have 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
    Mr. Hanes was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Evelyn, and his brothers Loren and Arthur G. Hanes.
    A funeral service to celebrate Charles’ life will be held on Saturday, May 10 at 2 p.m. in the Bourbon First United Methodist Church with Rev. Mark Day officiating.
    Burial will follow in the Sandridge Cemetery at Bourbon with military honors.
    Deaton-Clemens Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangement.
