Indiana National, Swan Lake to host NAIA Men’s Golf National Championships next week E-mail
Thursday, 08 May 2008
PLYMOUTH — Thirty-two colleges and universities from throughout North America will be represented at the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics 57th Annual Men’s Golf National Championships next week at Indiana National Golf Club at Swan Lake Resort.
It’s the second consecutive year that Indiana National Golf Club and the local community have hosted the event. The host school for the tournament is Bethel College, of South Bend, which draws an automatic berth in the competitive field, which begins play Tuesday and concludes Friday.
A special publication concerning the tournament is inserted in today’s Pilot News. Additionally, daily coverage of the event will be in the newspaper Wednesday through Saturday next week.
More than 500 team members, coaches and NAIA support staff will converge on the Plymouth area this weekend, with rules committee reviews and practice rounds Sunday and Monday. Tourney play begins Tuesday.
Oklahoma City University is the defending NAIA Men’s Golf National Champion and has won the title six of the last seven years.
It’s a truly international field of players, with team members coming from hometowns as far away as Australia, Sweden, Mexico, Canada, Colombia, Argentina, England, Scotland, France, Spain and South Africa.
Between 250 and 300 Swan Lake employees will staff the event, along  with volunteers from the community, Bethel and Ancilla colleges.
Pat Bayley, PGA professional and Indiana National’s director of golf, is organizing the tournament.
