Speaker of the event was basketball coach Mike Lightfoot who has coached at Bethel College for 20 years. He is a 1974 graduate of LaVille High School and a 1978 graduate of Bethel College. Lightfoot said, “I remember praying in school. This has been taken away.”
Lightfoot said he helped Plymouth coach Jack Edison win his first game; however, he admitted he was playing for LaVille at the time. After telling a number of stories connected to his teaching and coaching career, Lightfoot ended on a more serious note. He said, “One of the things we need to do is act.” He said, “Freedom is a choice.” Special music for the program was provided by members of the Lincoln Junior High choir under the direction of Brani Brennan. Singers included: Kaley Brower, Maicee Evans, Alex Moore, Megan Senter, and Kailey Whitley. Marlena Whitworth provided piano music during the meal. The “History of the Prayer Breakfast and the 2008 Prayer for Our Nation” was read by Bailey Capper, Emily Walden and Taylor Milliser. All three were representing the Adam’s Street Kids ministries. Proceeds from the program were presented to the Boy Scouts of America Troops 251 and 257 and Pack 222. Members of the three presented the colors during the opening ceremony. Mayor Senter rose to the position of Eagle Scout himself.
