PLYMOUTH — Lincoln Junior High and Washington Elementary are the sites in this year’s Summer Food Program, sponsored by the United States Department of Agriculture and the Indiana Department of Education.
The program provides breakfast and lunch for free to any child 18 years of age or under. Breakfast is served at both locations from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. Lunch at Washington is from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. and at the junior high from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 a.m. The program will run from July 9 until Aug. 3.
Jane Williams, who runs the program at Lincoln, doesn’t mind working in the summer at all. She enjoys being able to feed around 150 kids every lunch time.
“I just love being around the kids,” she said. “It’s really nice to keep in contact with them during the summer. I work in the school year at the high school so I get to meet a lot of little brothers and sisters.”
Shelly Record and her son, Lucas, and daughter, Madelyn, had a chance to share lunch together. Shelly teaches summer school at Lincoln.
“I get to go back to work here in a minute and it’s really nice for us to be able to have lunch together,” she said. “I think it’s great that they do this for all the kids in the community.”
Tuesday’s lunch was a big hit with Sydney and Emily Morris, and their friend Christin Davidson.
“The chicken nuggets,” were what Sydner proclaimed the big favorite with her two lunch companions weighing in on the value of the chocolate milk as well.
“The kids at this age are just so polite,” said Williams. “They’re all ‘please’ and ‘thank you.’ Its really nice to be able to give them lunch.”
